Sitting here watching all of these TV shows about those dear children mistreated by their parents!

I see this as a sign of the times.  Isn't it pathetic that now the neighbors are talking about how, "They though it was strange bla bla"  and "They saw the children pacing back and forth through the upstairs window for hours in the middle of the night" and on and on.

Family members saying, "We just felt strange around my brother and sister-in-law and bla bla".

The family members sit before the cameras (hair all done up, make-up perfect) talking to the cameras.

This just makes me sick.  All we hear about terrorists is "if you see something.....say something".  Even with that people don't speak up!

What is wrong with people that they couldn't pick up the phone and ask that the house and the people in there at least be looked into.

Did these children go to school?  If so, where were the teachers?  If they weren't able to bathe but once a year, they must have stunk?  Why wasn't that at least reported?

I just can't believe this!  It says something about society today.  It's pathetic really.

One day I'll tell you what happened in my neighborhood.  I'll say I'm not one to 'just let things go'.

They were home-schooled. Looks like the parents were religious nuts who saw nothing wrong with chaining up and starving their children to the point that they are developmentally disabled. Their punishment should be exactly what they put their children through.

I can't believe you missed all the stuff about home schoolng these children discussed here on these forums as well as the web. I don't think it's a sign of the times as much as it is aberrant human behavior which has always been. But I do see your question about us as to what constitutes a community and if you read Simone de Beauvoir's The Coming Of Age, this peculiar behavior is no more peculiar than some of the other communal, societal behavior's through out history. But there is the so-called "dark side of home schooling" which is not new as well. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/oct/19/raashanai-coley-dark-side-home-schooling

@Annabellethecat66 - ITA. And, can't those calls for house checks be done anonomously?

@Annabellethecat66, shaking my head.  I especially loved the “if you see something say something” comment.  Those so called neighbors are as guilty as the parents.  Disgusting...to say the least.

Honestly Annabelle--I always felt that things were waaaay worse now then back in the *olden days*.

But Geez Louise, when I read newspaper articles from a hundred years or so ago, I can't believe some of the things I read.

I cringe at how blatently morbid the reporting was---nothing seemed to be held back.

I am shocked that it's what my grandparents and great grandparents read.

We're talking the morning and evening editions of both Big City and Small Town USA.  Well known newspapers, not rag mags like Enquirer.

And these were true stories, not fiction.  Things that were happening.  Gruesome murders, wicked people, unfortunate victims, sexual abuse (nothing was omitted).

I feel like things are *toned down* a bit, even though all this stuff still happens.

Anyways, getting back to the images that are coming out of the living conditions of the homes these children lived in, along with the abuse they endored, I feel badly for them that the whole world has to see how awful it was for them.

It just makes it worse/harder for them to get to a better place, in my opinion.

Hard for me to explain.  It just makes me sicker that they can't walk out in the world without a canvas painted of them already.

Make any sense?

[ Edited ]

I read that the Turpins' are in the same belief system as the Duggars, the large family thing.

Tonight on 20/20...the Turpins.

It's just plain evil. Can't blame it on religion. These were deiintely soulless people.

This is beyond my comprehension:

These two happy and well-fed one-year-old Maltese puppies were found inside the California House of Horrors, where David and Louise Turpin's children were shackled and starved. They were put up for adoption in Vargo

Why do family members not speak up? They're afraid the kids will be dumped on them when the parents get locked up.

I've known women who encourage their grown daughters to stay in an abusive relationship because they don't want them moving back home with the grands in tow.

Worse yet, Granny got The New Man who doesn't want the extended family living with him. In Granny's house.

Don't even get me started.
