@Foxxee While packages have been shrinking for at least a decade the difference is the cost of these items. It was the deceptive packaging that consumers often didn't notice because the prices did not increase significantly.
Today we have not only the incredibly shrinking packages but prices are accounting for many items to be taken out of grocery carts before checking out. People are able to afford less and less wholesome food.
This is the issue-those who truly cannot afford certain food items because of the rising costs. The packaging is secondary.
People can live without cookies; but people cannot live without healthy food items.
We ourselves have put items back on shelves; our food list and budget have changed considerably. Yet we are still ok.
Imagine those depending on food banks and Meals on Wheels, e.g.

Maybe allowing the invisible hand of the marketplace to control every aspect of the economy-- isn't always the best way to run things. Huh.
What kind of pricing reforms and controls are we all considering supporting here?
What should individual states be doing to combat this?

I'm just waiting for the standard box of cake mix to be reduced to a two-cupcake size. It has already become so skimpy that it won't fill standard size pans like 9 X 13" without some modification.

Yea...we love paying for the Food Banks and Meals on Wheels....at least our citizens are benefiting from our income tax payments.
"An estimated $490 million in base funding for fiscal year 2022 (October 2021 – September 2022) for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which provides food and administrative funds to states and tribes for distribution through organizations like food banks."
"Meals on Wheels programs are funded through different sources, the largest being the Older Americans Act: Nutrition Services Program. That federal funding sources accounts for 35% of costs (in the aggregate). The programs receive the remaining funds through other sources: State and local governments."

Yeah.....I remember going on foot with my Ma to the grocery store ....each of us dragging a wooden shopping cart. I actually witnessed women fighting on the grocery store floor over butter, sugar, and meat. di
Thank you for your birthday wish.
Maybe parts of the country were different. I was old enough to remember pulling a red wagon to a Safeway store. My mom had only 1 day to shop because of her working hours. It was about a mile from our Projects apartment.
Where I was raised was far from the good part of town. This Safeway store was well stocked, and the only issue was, what each person could afford. No women/men or kids fighting over any item.
You don't mention any specific year(s) so I have no clue what my age was at the times you mentioned.
