I definitely would tip the delivery people. I have always tipped furniture, mattress delivery and set up. Pizza delivery.  No reason not too. During summer deliveries they also get offered bottled water, lemonade or ice tea. $10 each for heavy deliveries. $5 for the pizza kid and when my daughters are home, he gets home baked cookies too!

@Wsmom  You've waited all morning for the sink and had to call the store and ask if it was going to be delivered? Then the guy called and said he thought he'd be there within an hour? If it's a stainless steel sink, they are lightweight. He's simply dropping it off! And he's very, very late. What if you had plans?

Who knows where or what he's been doing all morning, but it doesn't sound like he was making deliveries!  He should have contacted you mid-morning if he was going to be that late! You could have made other arrangements and you day would not have been ruined. Nope. I don't believe in a tip for that very late guy.

It would depend on his well they do the job and on whether, for instance, it's a hot day and they have lots of stairs to climb irvawkward interior spaces to navigate. I am always prepared to tip-/and hand out bottles of water or soda.

I tip most everyone. I want to, not because they expect it.  Occasionally I've tried to hand a tip to people helping me with something and they wouldn't take it. They said they weren't allowed to or said they appreciated the offer but didn't expect or want a tip. Someone being obnoxious to me is another story.

@NicksmomESQ, I think you did the right thing.

exactly why i do it also! i saw my mom do it often and this is one tradition that i feel good about carrying on. my children have been taught to do the same.

I would tip them if they have to climb stairs or move furniture to get the mattress set up

Outside of servers at restaurants, I tip based on a number of things.

Did the company send me great people, that were friendly, efficient, treated my property with the respect it deserved? Did they have to simply drop something on the front porch, or did they have to take it up three flights of narrow winding stairs? Did I get a great price on the service or the items being delivered, or did I pay top notch prices? Did I have to pay extra for delivery? Did they go the extra mile for me in some way, that was above and beyond what I contracted for?  All of these things factor into tipping and how much from me.

We had our last (for now) 8 trees taken down professionally a few weeks ago. We originally had 40 to do and have spent the last three years doing the other 32 by ourselves, so we know what kind of massive job it is.

The crew we hired came at a really bargain price relative to all the other quotes, but were so professional, so fast, and did so great, I tipped all six guys, $25 each, at the end of the four hours they took to take the trees down, limb them, and grind the limbs. They seemed surprised, and one even tried to refuse, so I don't think they get tipped too often.

If it is a high dollar service, like an electrician or plumber, I don't tip usually , unless there is some extra mile they go with something. I feel they are charging heavily by the hour,  sometimes billing me from the moment they leave their home base, and doing their basic job at a high enough rate of pay.

It was an interesting day when they were to bring both mattresses, box springs, one frame and mattress covers.
I didn't receive a call the night before as a reminder, nor did I get a call that morning to give me a time estimate. I called the business and was directed to an internet sight. So I checked on it and was given a time estimate. They were actually almost late, but within that time. So they brought things in, and yes, they had to go up and down stairs. I have a tri-level.😔 So everything was going well until they discovered they had not picked up one of the mattresses. So, two days later, they are bringing the other mattress tomorrow. The manager at the business offered to refund me the 50$ delivery fee, but I asked him if he would give me one of those fancy over 100$ pillows instead and he agreed. So...after that long story, even though the guys messed up on the mattress, I gave them each 10 bucks. They were nice, and I think very nervous about the mess up! Now tomorrow I get MY mattress!

I like to tip people who provide a service.  It's not a lot out of pocket usually and it is a way of thanking people, which always makes you feel good.  I especially like to tip people like car hops and those that don't make a lot.  I figure a few bucks makes way more difference to them than out of my pocket at this point in life, and it is a way of showing gratitude that I am able to tip someone.

I bought two mattresses that are being delivered tomorrow. I did pay for delivery. Should I tip the guys?

@chihuahuamom  If delivery people bring heavy, awkward pieces of furniture or tv, I tip...assuming they’re pleasant and aren’t klutzy knocking things over on way in or out.
