Re: Should I not go to the Dominican Republic in October?

Do not go!  Better to lose money on a cancelled trip than lose your life or the life of a loved one.

The D R depends on tourism.  I don't think their investigators will dig deeply because of what they might find that will keep tourists away for a long time.

The fact that the FBI is involved is good, but they will only get what the D R gives them.  They won't be able to investigate like they would in this country.

Re: Should I not go to the Dominican Republic in October?

@JBKO I would not go either.  i've been to the DR and would not go back, even if the current issue had not come up.  That is also a country where I would not go off the beaten path and explore other areas.  You are encouraged not to do that. In fact, many resorts there are surrounded by armed guards to keep the tourists safe inside.   No DR for us!

There are plenty of other places to visit in the Caribbean if that is were you want to go.  The USVI and  British VI are lovely.  As is Bermuda, though it is not Caribbean.

I've traveled to many places, but I have no desire to go back to any place in the Caribbean......

I would for sure cancel and re schedule for someplace else. We have so many beautiful and interesting places right here in the US and I think you would be a lot safer.

There is no way that I’d go to the DR. You mentioned that you spent time in France. Why not to one of the French islands, like Martinique or St. Martin (the French side)? There are so many lovely places to visit that it just isn’t worth the risk. Unless and until the authorities act responsibly to find out what or who is behind these tragedies in the Dominican Republic, tourism will, and should, go down.

I've vacationed in the DR in the past and each time, we've stayed in a resort with uniformed armed guards. I can't imagine with this kind of security why anyone would want to go off the beaten path.

I don't care what they figure out is going on, if anything, in the DR.  They will never get a dime of my money because of the way they handled the matter of that poor woman who was beaten.  The lack of compassion by the resort and the police was sickening.  They just didn't care.

I prefer vacationing in the USA.  There are many beautiful places and all types of weather and terrain. Also, keeping money right here helping Americans.

@JBKO  It should be obvious by now that Dominican Republic is a very dangerous place to "vacation".  I heard stories about this country years go, and now we are hearing it on the national news, thank goodness and about time it is exposed.  This is a 3rd world country and no place to explore off the beaten path, let alone explore the beaten path in any foreign country.  Search for a safer country to venture if you want to return to the US safely; or you could venture through the US!
