Absolutely - another vet.
‎08-06-2014 01:22 PM
I made an appointment with another vet. He's also an ACVIM Diplomat. A friend of mine took her cat to him (she went to the vet I 've been going to) because they just didn't know what was wrong with her cat. He did a two hour exam and knew exactly what was wrong and what to do. Thank you everybody. I'll keep you posted.

I think vets are no different from our doctors. Sometimes we like them, sometimes we don't. And sometimes we like them for a long time, and then for whatever reason, that relationship changes or they do something that really bothers you, and the doctor/patient relationship just doesn't work any more. Just because they know you and your medical history is not a reason not to find a different doctor.
I had a gastroenterologist once that I saw numerous times over several years. Then he did something with my insurance that really made me mad, and at my last appointment with him, he talked so much about his wife and his personal life that I was livid-he hardly discussed my medical issues at all. I found a new doctor, and a year or so later, my son was dating a nurse. She said that doctor that I stopped seeing was a joke with most of the nurses and some other doctors.
So sometimes it's necessary to make a change. Hopefully, this new vet will figure out the best course of action and Brandy will start feeling better.

I don't blame you for changing. You just didn't feel like you were getting the support you needed at what is a difficult time in a pet's life. Bear in mind too that you are extra-sensitive to any vet's behavior because you are feeling sad about your dog's health. Keep us posted on the new vet.

Absolutely change vets! That Vet obviously didn't care. My Vet always calls back if I have a problem with my dog.By the way I have a Sheltie also. He is 13 and has good health. He is such a great dog. Good luck with Brandy!

Call up whatever friends that you have who also have pets and ask them who they go to. I'm sure that one of their vets will see you today based on the fact that it's an emergency and that your friend recommended them to you.
Please give us an update when you can.

I would suggest changing vets as well. There are so many good ones, with compassion and knowledge and training that it seems pointless to stay where it doesn't feel that they care about your pet (s) and you!
A few years ago my older cat was having lots of problems and everything signaled that she was going to die fairly soon. I cannot say enough good things about my vet at the time. They are a nondescript office with old-school decor, sometimes outdated filing, etc., but the compassion they showed was amazing. I wrote the one vet a little note of thanks b/c she was so caring and tender to my cat and to me. Fast forward a few years and I now take our dog elsewhere, but I still visit this vet for boarding sometimes (they are close) and I remember how great they were when my cat was dying.
