Re: Shawn’s podcast with Martha

It really held my interest. Martha is one of the most confident people I've ever seen or heard. I wonder if she is like that with close friends.

I also cannot imagine having all that energy at 84 or even at 50!

In Shawn's interview and other times I've heard Martha on QVC I always wonder what she is thinking.  To me she is one of those people who you feel sure are having many thoughts and maybe criticisms. That's just my impression and I may be totally wrong about her. She does seem to say what she thinks but in an interview and questions like "Do you like me?" what can she say?

She didn't seem reluctant to answer any question but as someone said, maybe accepted questions were scheduled.

Sometimes Shawn's questions were silly like asking if Martha used butter with her eggs. Of course Martha said and though she had a smile throughout I felt a kind of distain.

Maybe I'm wrong but I get the feeling she doesn't especially like Shawn and when Shawn asked do you like me and told Martha she was going to come over to her house and thought they would be friends, Martha of course answered she thought so too. But what could she say? I think Shawn really wants Martha's approval and friendship and really doesn't have  much confidence. She seems so wanting of other's approval and to like her. It can be overbearing.

It's interesting to see what others thought.

The Harry Slatkin interview is really good! One of my favorite ones.

And in it, Shawn tells Harry she needs advice about Martha and says she is trying not to freak out and says oh she needs to fawn a little. And Harry says no, Martha doesn't like fawning. Shawn says oh, no fawning! I mean who contrives how they are going to act and talk. Who would purposely fawn which is so disingenuous to me, or maybe again with Shawn, she just doesn't have much confidence in herself as herself!

In so many of these interviews,

I find it hard to hear, especially the quests. Shawn usually had the mic very close to her but the guests don't always and their voices fade out a lot.

I can't remember the format, maybe Barbara Walter's show, but Martha did talk about her prison time and her activities with the women there. She was quite open and positive about it all.

Re: Shawn’s podcast with Martha

[ Edited ]

I've enjoyed mostly all Shawn's podcasts, as I've posted often here, that I find her great in that role.

So Martha...Martha.......I'm always torn with her...but was interested to see how she'll respond to things.

On air selling I have some of the same feelings others have expressed here...she can make me feel uncomfortable, and the hosts often feel either too ingratiating or intimidated. But, I get it... she is who she is and isn't going to "put on" just to fit in, so I understand that. She's Martha. I'm neither a big fan of hers, nor a hater.

You can't take away any of her work and success. She knows who she is, what she likes etc etc. Of course this podcast had to be "limited" in time...hm...I feel she could have stayed as long as everyone does.

I will say, she's another one of those people that always make me feel like I have a thimble full of their energy!

Runs several businesses in this country, and others, writes books, does speaking engagements, parties when she can, hikes in Utah with the grands, gardens, raises her own chickens, designs her clothes (hm? I do believe she would definitely have a hand in what gets done, OF, course)...to name just a few things...impressive. I'm tired just listing it.

All in all I was interested watching, and thought Shawn did well. Poor Shawn at the end...Martha skirted the question if "she'd hire Shawn now", but who cares, Shawn, you have a good job. Smiley Wink

Ps..."never had any plastic surgery"....so maybe just not "cut"...but maybe other things that don't constitute surgery?...which no one ever says. Anyway, however she's holding it together, she looks good.

Oh, you must have missed that part, @Teddixat -- it did go by relatively quickly.  To answer your question-- yes I do, thankfully.

@Oznell.  Just how did she take the lord's name in vain?   Asking if one believes in God is not taking the lord's nane in vain!

@Teddixat Not sure how you missed it but at the beginning of the interview she clearly said "GDI". That is what @Oznell is referring to.

I've seen one other episode with Shawn and a subject-- it was Pat James Dementri, and it was a charming interview, with Shawn cutting up a bit, in that sort of elfin, kooky way she has.  In small doses, that can be amusing. (I don't watch Shawn's QVC presentations, as a rule.) Pat is a dear, and there was a nice rapport.

Personally, I was really disappointed at Shawn taking the Lord's name in vain in the interview.  It was 'cringe' to me, as it always is-- had not really expected that. Then, Shawn immediately sought confirmation from Martha that that was "ok".

A turn-off.   As for Martha, while I'm not a fan, she is kind of an enigmatic personality.  Quirky, so could be an interesting interview subject.  I do like her quality of being so fond of her late parents-- she speaks so affectionately of them, which is nice.  But for some reason she doesn't exude warmth in other ways ( at least to me).  I've never picked up on that from her, so, for me, her personality has limited appeal.

@shoekitty I had never heard of Stan Herman before QVC and don't really know how big of a deal he is.  I do know that I ordered one of his bathrobes once.  It was so extremely cheap - in the quality of the fabric and the construction.  I could not return it fast enough.  So, I am not a fan of his.  Never ordered or listened to him again.

Just pointing out that Martha was not convicted of insider trading or any securities fraud.  The trial judge threw out those charges.

She was convicted, essentially,  of lying to federal authorities and obstruction.

@THEY CallMe Mr Wilkes Correct.  But I firmly believe that she did partake in Insider trading, whether they could prove it legally or not.
