I hope I'm not breaking any rules with this post ...

For those of you who have sold on Marketplace:

I sold 3 ornaments to a customer.  We negotiated price, I packed them up and sent them UPS.  The box was delivered today.  All is well until I get a message from him that the box was stolen from his front porch.

He shared a photo from UPS of the box at his front door and now it's gone.  Ugh, the money is in my Venmo account, I have not transferred it out as I wanted to be sure it was received.

I'm a little leery of this but I can't accuse him of lying.  What are my options?  I have the tracking # and insurance.

Would someone be able to give me any advice or next steps?

thank you.

@roeroe1005  I must not understand something.  If he knows that the box was delivered to his front door by UPS, that means that he knows that you shipped it, plus you have the receipt, so I'm not sure why he feels he should be asking you for money back?  I do think that UPS automatically insures packages up to a certain amount - is it $100?  Or more than that?  But does their insurance cover package theft?  Maybe give UPS a call and see what they have to say.  Does he live in an apartment building or a condo?  Maybe they have insurance for this sort of thing?  Is it his home?  Homeowners insurance?  Was there a camera that could show the package being taken?

Sorry, I do not know the best way to proceed.

But I will share my experience.

I sold a bareMinerals kit to a lady on a makeup board. When I got the kit, I opened the kit and knew I did not like the shade of lipstick. I knew I would never wear it. The kit sat around for a month or so. I hated looking at it.. It bothered me. I spent so much money on the kit and would never use it.

A lady on the makeup board wanted to buy it. I shipped it to her. THEN she said that the lipstick was used. And she was upset and writing all kinds of nasty stuff that I would sell her USED bareMinerals kit!

I have never removed anything from the kit except the lipstick. And I could clearly see that the lipstick shade was too dark for my liking.

I refunded her the money. I am positive she just wanted the kit for nothing.

So now if I can't donate something. I THROW IT OUT! I am not going through that nastiness again.

Re: Selling on Marketplace

[ Edited ]

@roeroe1005  I have never sold anything on Marketplace but have bought a lot of appliances.

I get packages delivered by UPS often and they have never sent a picture to me. I know Amazon does it.

I would not refund his money because the package was delivered.

Maybe you can Goodle and see what you can find. Sorry this happened to you.

@roeroe1005  Call me skeptical. He knows it was delivered. I get photos for deliveries as well.

No way to know if he's lyiing or not, unfortunately.

I'd see if he has a FB  account and poke around there and see if you can get an idea of what he's abot.

I do a LOT of UPS for work and they do NOT take photos.

Did you require a signature from the recipient? Or did you waive it? If you have your own UPS account or you can look at UPS tracking and view Proof of Delivery.

Their standard insurance is $50 and covers loss or breakage. Read their terms on your tracking. You get charged more $ if you insure for more.

@Snowpuppy @roeroe1005   Right, only Amazon takes photos.

To me this means he took the photo and is lying.

Tell him UPS doesn't take photos which means HE took it therefore no refund.

Amazon, WalMart, DHL, Shipt and Door Dash in my area take photos.

@Snowpuppy I meant to say UPS does not.

The photo, whether he took it himself or not, is proof that it was delivered. In addition the tracking numbers would also prove that.  Did you check that tracking?

Anyway, there is no reason that you should be reimbursing for this situation. I don't know why he would think you should.  If it really was stolen that's a sad situation, but how could you possibly be at fault?  Why should you be out the money and the property?  If it had gotten lost in transit, that would have been a different situation.  and  in that case, UPS I think would reimburse you for the value.  He should report this theft to UPS and the police. And if he lives at a condo - report it to the manager and the association.
