Texting is not social media. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, MySpace....those are example of social media. A telephone is not.

Selfies do no have to be on social media.

My sister took one of the three of us (sisters) this weekend.

She had a FIT because her arm looked mammoth I guess because of the way she was holding the phone.

We didn't notice it at first, but when we did, we LAUGHED so hard, I APMP.{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

So Oxford Dictionary is incorrect? If so, that's a first.

I've participated in them when other people wanted them, but have never taken or posted any myself.

Definition of "selfie" from Oxford Dictionary:

A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.

Sending pictures of one's self & texting to someone is not, by definition, a selfie.

Of course it is. It's not where you upload or send it that makes it a selfie. It's who took the pic. Yourself? That's a selfie.

No. Look at the definition again. It says "typically" meaning a selfie is usually taken by a phone or cam and uploaded to a social media site. It doesn't say that it HAS to be that to be a selfie. You see?

A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.

Your interpretation was incorrect. See Snarky's explanation.
