Re: Scientology doc on Sunday night, HBO. Anyone interested?

Do they even worship God? I've never heard of actual church services, but admittedly they're shrouded in secrecy.

Scientology should be billed as a self-help mechanism, as clearly they have some valuable tools that have helped people. Kirstie Alley said that they were the only ones that were able to get her off drugs, and they have helped many others with their 'issues', but I find it weird that they call themselves a church.

One time, I got curious and went to their website. They have free online courses.

I wonder why a member stays once they are "clear"?

They have a sign outside their local church..."free personality tests"...or sometimes it says "Learn how to Destress."

Yes, that might attract some people.

They are in a huge building just off Times Square and have these same signs on the sidewalk. I think they may own the whole building. As we walked by a few of us would occassionally mutter "Free Katie Holmes".

I have it scheduled. Should be interesting.

Many many years (decades!) ago I had a friend who was in it. I went to a couple of things with her. She ended up moving way up in the organization and was moved to Florida. Nobody ever heard from her again. Of course I'm not inferring anything from that. I just think that she was no longer allowed to associate with those of us who were outside the religion. I really liked her, too. Smiley Sad

I heard the man who made the documentary interviewed, and I think he said there are only about 50 thousand Scientologists worldwide. So, it isn't all that big an organization.

It would be interesting to hear what all of Tom Cruise's former wives have to say about him and his "religion." I'm sure they all have a gag order.

As for the documentary, I may watch. It may be strangely interesting, and I love documentaries.
