Too bad that these computer scammers/hackers who obviously are very smart and tech savvy, don't put their skills to honest work.  They would be invaluable at a real company if not their own.  Instead they are looking for a quick buck illegally.

The pastor refunded or returned all the donations so it wasn't something that the scammer could have.  However, some folks might have tapped into their on=line banking accounts and infor might have been compromised.

If anyone's bank account was compromised by buying a Target gift card, he or she has bigger problems than a gift card scam.

Most do!   Some right after they get out of prison (reduced sentence).   Most work in the highest level of the government.

Anyone can probably  jack onto the church system for names and addresses.   In the old days, before internet we used to have church directories!!  Members of church used directory to contact parishinors this way for their sales business. They were reported and heavily reprimanded.  It wasn't done to,scam, just to use the directory as a sales list. Omg, Pastor was livid, person apologized and that was it. Once you get the mailing list contacts are easy. Unless they got list from hacking into a giving site on church website where one pays tithes and gifts. That's harder to do.   Maybe the hacker was hoping to get some of the cards at the pastors mailbox.  When my husbands identity was stolen years ago they sent goods from places they opened cards in our name to a mail box at a vacant home where the owner had just moved out. Long story. They were caught.  But they contacted UPS using MYCHOICE, and rerouted the merchandise to this vacant  address.  As of course otherwise stuff woukd have gone to us. It was a quick nab! though they opened cards, only 2 purchases went through and were delivered overnight they others were caught before anything left warehouses.  Everything was taken care of by Experion.  The worst part???  No one wanted to press charges.

Yesterday I got a email (scam) from a friend asking me to buy Apple gift cards ($50/each) for his "nephews".  It really looked like a real email with him "signing" his name.

I called him and yes he was hacked several people he told me had called him.

As for your pastor I'm sure he will just return gc to you & others.

I swear everyday it's "something"!

@Puzzle Piece .............Sounds like the church's computer was hacked.  Someone needs  to change the password(s) immediately and check into a better security programs.  Also, someone needs to check into who in the congregation has the password.  This sounds like an inside job to me.
