Saw Snake in My Flower Bed

A friend picked up a rock in my flower bed & a small snake was under it. He said it moved & went down in a hole. I didn't know snakes went down in holes. Just wondering if any of you know if snakes makes holes & go down in them. Now, I am scared to go out in my back yard because I am afraid there might be another big one out there. YIKES!
