Saw Snake in Flower Bed

A friend picked up a rock in my flower bed & a small snake was under it. I asked him to kill it & he said it went down in a hole. I didn't know snakes made holes. Do any of you know if snakes make holes? I am so scared to go out in my backyard now. I am afraid if there is a small one out there, a big one might be out there, as well. YIKES!
