Sam Champion is leaving ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ for The Weather Channel.
Sam Champion thinks he can help turn another morning TV show into a winner.
Champion, the meteorologist on ABC’s “Good Morning America” since 2006, is jumping to The Weather Channel to anchor a new morning show there starting early next year.
His departure from “GMA,” which has soared to the top of the morning ratings during Champion’s years as one of the core on-air personalities, seems amicable.
ABC News President Ben Sherwood called him “a vital member of our team.”
Sherwood said “GMA” will “celebrate” Champion on his last show there Wednesday.
He will be replaced by his ABC colleague Ginger Zee, both on “GMA” and for other ABC programs that incorporate weather.
Weather Channel President David Clark told The News negotiations began “several months ago,” as the Weather Channel was developing plans for a rebranding that will include a new look and a new morning show.
