Sad Over Failure To Help Worthy Young Person

My husband and I met a wonderful young man in France. We've known him for two years now. He's only 24 but worked his way up to become maître d' in a gourmet restaurant in the countryside. His dream has always been to work in America. We know a few people in the restaurant industry and arranged an interview for him. He took all his savings, came to NYC for a few days, and was thrilled when the restaurant owner offered him a job. After he returned to France he heard nothing more so we contacted the owner. It turns out the chef didn't want to hire a foreigner with no US experience. I had to be the one to break the bad news. I feel awful. I know it's not my fault but I feel responsible for setting hopes in motion only to have them dashed. And then there's all the money this kid wasted. I am heartbroken over the disappointment. All I can think is no good deed goes unpunished.
