I just got the email that Archivers is closing all of its stores. That is sad news for scrapbookers.

Oh no, say it isn't so!!! I love that store!!! I was just in the Omaha NE store last week...........that is indeed VERY sad news!! I am signed up for their emails but haven't received anything about the stores closing yet. It is getting harder and harder to find good quality scrapbooking supplies.

I got an email this morning. At first, I thought it was fake. It read that ALL stores will close in February and that item markdowns will start immediately. They cited the economic downturn and slowing of paper crafts. My Archivers store is always busy, with a line to check out. I was really surprised to hear about this! Not sure where to go for crops!

I got that email too. The one by me closed about 6 months ago. I remember how busy they used to be.

Hate to see any store close, because I feel for the employees who will be out of a job, and they're not that easy to find. However, am not surprised by this news. I liked Archivers and could get lost in that store for at least an hour or more, but they just could not compete with the other hobby and craft stores that have weekly sales and coupons. Who wants to spend full price for the same thing that you could get at Michael's, JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby for 40% off? Of course they had a more extensive selection, but you paid premium price for it. Also, in my area, when Archivers opened, they put many independently owned scrapbook stores out of business. Their sales and coupons were few and far between. Yes, they started offering more of them last fall, but too little too late. I feel that Archivers is partially responsible for their own demise.

Scrapooking is a fairly expensive hobby which IMO took a big hit when the economy tanked, and probably never fully recovered. People just can't spend $2 on one sheet of paper, then add to that all the embellishments, cardstock, stickers, etc. It isn't difficult to spend $5-$10 on a page, by the time you purchase everything, as some manufacturers hope that you do. I always buy my scrapbooking/card making supplies on sale and on clearance, something you could rarely do at Archivers. They had 2 stores in my area that were both a 45 minute ride from my house, so I went to one or the other a total of 4-5 times a year. One store closed in early summer of 2013, the other will be one of the last to close. Yes, I will miss Archivers, but it is not the end of the world. I can still get my scrapbooking supplies just as I did most of the time....at other hobby and craft stores.

I got the email too, I'm not really surprised. I'm sad that more people will be looking for work.

I read about this in the paper. Funny thing is, I didn't know there was one here. I've lived here 7 years and I guess didn't notice it. It's hard losing specialty stores.
