I assume that it is real, but I don't have texting on my phone.  There evidently are other ways to get in touch (covered in the email).

I do have a cell phone but it's not for everyday use. and I am a little shocked that they wouldn't include a landline as an alternative.  Or the email address they already have.

I went there to give them the cell phone # and couldn't see where to do it !

after all this hoopla. I went to ''my profile' no place asked for it, no pop up asking for it.

so, guess not gonna worry about it.

Too much information and no privacy for the... what they consider "no body".

What I would like to see them do is give the ones on SS an INCREASE!!!

@SharkE Wait until on or after 8/1, & when you sign in that's when they'll ask for your cell phone #.  Remember, you don't have to do that if you  don't want to.  You'll have to find out from them what your alternatives are.  This cell phone texting thing is an added layer of security.

Yeah, I'd like an increase, too.

I received the email today and sent the following in return from the website:  Please close my My Social Security online account.  I will not be forced to obtain and pay for a cell phone and service.  If you can change the cell phone requirement to a email message I'll reconsider.

@SharkE...the new policy has not gone into effect yet, so if you went there today, you could log in as usual. It is after a certain date that you will need to get another code via text to enter before getting into you account.

I wouldn't respond to ANY email claiming to be from most businesses or any government agency.

@Irshgrl31201. You probably would if you'd specifically set up email with them.  You can be skeptical about that message from SS, but it is legitimate.  They are trying to establish an extra layer of security for those of us who access our SS accounts online.
