Re: SMILING OR GRINNING.....

My definition - probably not correct. Smile can be closed mouth or show teeth as demonstrated by croemer lovely cat. But if you see a cat in real life doing that - run for your life. Grin does not have teeth showing which is very close to the cousin smirk. Smirk is a grin by a j&rk. Snarl shows teeth with pinched nose action which may also be what croemer's lovely cat is doing.

Re: SMILING OR GRINNING.....

Catfancy, I think a smile is broader. All the teeth showing. It can be close mouthed too, but a grin is a small smile, if you ask me.

Re: SMILING OR GRINNING.....

To me, grinning can have different connotations.

Mischevious grin, flirtatious grin, evil grin, sarcastic grin.

Smiling has more of a warm connotation.

Broad smile, open smile, warm smile, charming smile, welcoming smile, friendly smile.

I agree with you but a grin also implies someone's teeth are showing to me.
