@STYLE wrote:MY SISTER'S HUSBAND PASSED AWAY ON JULY 30th OF THIS YEAR. HER HUSBAND WAS THE PRIMARY ON THEIR COSTCO CARD. SINCE COSTCO IS N O LONGER ALLOWING MORE THAN ONE MEMBER PER CARD SHE APPLIED FOR A NEW CARD. WOW!!! WHAT THEY PUT HER THRU FOR A CRUMY COSTCO CARD. ASKED QUESTIONS LIKE: YEARLY INCOME, STATUS OF MORTGAGE ON HER HOME (WHICH SHE OWNS OUTRIGHT) YEARS LIVING IN WASHINGSTON STATE. SHE WAS SO UPSET WITH THIS NONSENSE SHE TOLD THE CLERK THAT COSTCO IS JUST NOT FRIENDLY TO WIDOWS. WHO DO THEY THINK STHEY ARE. ITS A LOUSY WHOLESALE CLUB. GETTING TOO BIG FOR THEIR PANTS.
I can understand your sister being emotionally overwrought after losing her husband so recently. And therefore she was too upset to realize that she was applying for a credit card rather than a store card. And maybe her husband had always taken care of this sort of thing so she was clueless as to how it all works.
But I can't understand how you yourself would decide based on this that Costco is "unfriendly to widows" and is a "lousy store" etc. Sounds as if they just had a miscommunication as to what kind of card she wanted. Doesn't sound as if the clerk said or did anything rude.
BTW I'm not even a Costco customer, just trying to figure out your rant.

I have a neighbor who drives a friend who is a member. This friend cannot drive. He has disabilities. He also speaks very poor English. It seems that my neighbor not only shops for this person but while he is there shops for himself as well. He is not a member. I know this because one afternoon he asked to ride with us to Costco He filled our basket with his stuff. Surprised me. When we were ready to check out we paid first with our credit card --- we are member. His turn, he handed over his credit card... not a member... and then accepted it and he walked out with a receipt and HHIS groceries. No idea how or why they allowed this but they did.

First, stop yelling at us (using all caps).
Second, she took her grief out on Costco. I get it and feel really bad for her. Grief does strange things to people and it's tough.
Third, perhaps she was confused about what kind of card she wanted or Costco misunderstood what kind she wanted -- membership card or credit card.
Fourth, she'll get more flies with honey than vinegar. In grief, it's hard to always remember this. I've been there and remember doing a couple of crazy things shortly after deaths of loved ones too.

They have to scan a membership card. I can’t imagine how this was even possible.

This is why Costco has taken a harder stance on membership cards being in the hands of the member. Seems like a lot of people are doing this and they are not allowing it anymore. I am sure some people get through the line without incident. I have been stopped and had my picture on the back looked at numerous times. I asked why and they said people were using other people's card and it wasn't fair to members. One lady next to me had to go the office and verify that she was on the account in order to purchase items that day. It's their company and they can enforce what rules they want. I love Costco.

@bonnielu could he have used a Digital Membership Card? Don't know how it works at Cosco but at Sam's Club a lot of Customers prefer to do that than having to take the Card with them.

Just checked with my neighbor and she said her Cosco Credit Card doubles as a Membership Card.
In that case the Member doesn't have to carry both.

A cardholder is allowed to bring two nonmember guests with them. They are not supposed to shop and are not allowed to pay. Obviously they are going to shop. At my Costco, they have even let them pay separately. I guess it depends on how strict each store is.

I have been a member since 2001 and I never thought that I looked like my photo years ago, in that stark black and white picture. I hope I never have to go to the office to verify myself, but if I do. I have my regular I.D. so no problem.
I love Costco as well.
