Re: Rockefeller Center 2024 Tree Reveal

@geezerette

The trees often come from homeowners. I read that sometimes they are trees so huge they are afraid of damage to property in a big storm.

They are healthy, old trees. 😢

Well I like that the wood from the tree will be used to build homes.

@Estellee - It is perfectly shaped, isn't it? Almost like it's not real.

Re: Rockefeller Center 2024 Tree Reveal

I'd hate to see such a beautiful tree cut down.  I agree that the homeowners are probably worried about it being so close to their house, but still...a shame.

Re: Rockefeller Center 2024 Tree Reveal

@geezerette - no, someone actually goes out to different areas and picks out the tree. The owners of the tree are also invited to the tree lighting at Rock Centre.

Re: Rockefeller Center 2024 Tree Reveal

I wouldn't want that to fall on my house!  Yikes.  It would have cost a fortune to get that thing taken down.  It's perfect for the tree this year.  It is an honor for the tree.

Re: Rockefeller Center 2024 Tree Reveal

They don't just take down that tree. They'll also take one or more similar trees, and use the branches from those trees to fill in gaps on their showpiece tree. There's a lot of craftsmanship that goes into their display tree. From the time that tree gets taken down until it's put on full display, it'll undergo tree plastic surgery and get extra branches implanted, groomed, and remade into a more perfect specimen. They'll bore holes into the trunk and add extra branches. They'll wire branches into a better position. It's never as simple as chopping down a tree and throwing some lights on it. They do a lot besides that.

Re: Rockefeller Center 2024 Tree Reveal

The Rockefeller Center gardener first spotted the tree in 2020 during a scouting trip.

When he approached the owner about potentially using the tree one day, the answer was an immediate YES!

I think the donors realize the importance of their contributions, which give joy and happiness to millions and knowing the tree will have purpose and value beyond the holiday season.
