Re: Robin Thicke and Pharrell

I've listened to the Marvin Gaye song Got To Give It Up and I own Blurred Lines. The only similarity I hear is the drum line and similar drum lines are used in all songs. You can't own a beat exclusive to everyone else as far as I am concerned. The song doesn't sound at all the same and quite frankly isn't as good as Blurred Lines. I hope they appeal this because it sets a bad precedent for anyone to come along and claim they were ripped off if a few beats are the same. It looks to me as if Marvin Gaye's family is just trying to cash in on whatever they can off a dead man. Too bad they couldn't keep his own father from shooting him to begin with. He'd then still be around to create more music. Pharrell is a good man and also very talented. He doesn't HAVE to rip some other artist off.

I agree. When I listened to them side by side they didn't seem alike at all except for those cowbell beats or whatever they are called.

I completely agree with everything you have said here especially what I highlighted, he is beyond talented. I have listened to both many times and there is a big difference between being inspired by a song and copying a song. You would literally have to sue every musician on earth for this and every musician I know feels this sends a very dangerous precedent.

A few notes sound the same to me, but then they do in many songs. I don't think it's like My Sweet Lord vs He's So Fine, or Under Pressure vs Ice Ice Baby.

Yes, Vanilla Ice sampled Under Pressure.

Re: Robin Thicke and Pharrell

I listened to a video on You Tube that compares the 2 songs. I think the only sounds that are the same are the drum beat/cowbell in between verses. So I don't know.

I am sure people in the music industry have heard so many songs in their lifetime, that when making new music this can happen by accident. I just don't think it was deliberate. But obviously the court did.

Also, I've heard so many songs over the years by various artists that sound like they have similarities to other songs, but no lawsuit ever came out of them.

I didn't either. Did make Thicke look like a dunce though.

A new low even for you. You think this family had any control over his suicide?
