Rhododendron/gardening question, please

My friend gave me a plant which I think is a rhododendron, and she said I could plant it outside in the spring. She gave it to me a month ago, when my brother passed. I have watered it a lot, however, it is dying. Should I just chuck it, or will it come back? Does anyone know? Thanks
