@1jenniferjuniper ... I don't know about that. I've been on some breast cancer boards. Other members of the board said they found out their results on Promethease also. After additional genetic testing by their doctor, the Promethease results turned out to be accurate.

It's good to be skeptical, but the proof is in the pudding.

If you only paid 100.00 it's a scam. If you are that concerned about your health your dr. Can send you to a reputable genetist for accurate testing.

@1jenniferjuniper ... It is apparent that you do not know much about all this ancestry stuff or the genetic testing. Yes, a reputable genetist will charge me thousands of $$$$ to virtually get the same information. I will be seeing my doctor. It's good to be skeptical, but not everything is a scam.

We are living in a new era now where genetic testing is new, and they are learning more about genetics everyday...especially when people enter their "raw data" into the research field so they can better analyze things.

@luckywife ... Thank you so much for your sensible and useful information! It really helps to hear things from people who have been through this.

I agree that the best route to go for genetic testing is through a genetic counsellor, but I do believe that the results I received were accurate...but just thrown out at me and rather shocking! Anyway, I will be finding out how accurate the results are. I am a health professional though, so I do understand much of it.

I'm not the type of person who wants to just hang onto my breasts if there is a risk. I'm not vain about them and would not mind having them prophylactically removed if that is an option.

I have seen the criteria for insurance to cover genetic testing, and I may not qualify. My mother and her sister both had breast cancer, but that may not be enough...and no one in our family had ovarian cancer. I'll check with my insurance plan and have my doctor appeal if it is denied.

Thank you again for sharing your experience and all the information!

Re: Results of My DNA Testing Are In...Scary!

Yes scary but the GOOD thing is now you know and you can discuss the results with your doctor and formulate a plan, one that is more stringent and aggressive in terms of routine testing which should include ovary checks via Ultrasound or other methods. You may even consider getting your ovaries removed (including fallopian tubes!!) since you are at such high risk but that is something to discuss with your doctors. I don't say that lightly either but if your results are accurate, this may be your best bet. If you feel ANY discomfort in your abdomen area ever, you need to see your doctor.

Good luck to you- you are so brave to want to know all your risks, etc!

This actually might (and should be enough) since breast cancer risk increases with a history on the maternal side. If it was on your paternal line, it isn't as much of a risk.

Since you are a health professional then you surely know that genetic testing is not new. It's been around for a long time. 123 and me was one of the companies that was targeted by the FDA  for misleading the public, but I'm sure you know that too, Lol!

Brinklii, If you live in North or South Carolina and have access to Carolinas Healthcare System's Levine Cancer Institute, they have wonderful genetic counsellors available to assist you.

In my Mother's family every woman who died of natural causes died from breast or ovarian cancer. I did not need the test to see if I had this gene but when I was diagnosed  with breast cancer at age 34 they did test me and I am BRAC2 +. I'm not too worried about the BC - I know that can be diagnosed early and treated - i am worried about the ovarian as it has a very high mortality rate.I had one ovary removed a long time ago for a different reason but I still have one floating around in there and when they did my hyster they couldn't find it to remove it. I had a tubal pregnancy and after that the ovary just is floating around in there untethered to anything. At least the women in my family don't tend to get their ovarian cancer until they are into their 80's.

Re: Results of My DNA Testing Are In...Scary!

I am going to have this all done when I return from vacation... which will take awhile.. so many square dance festivals ahead.

I was tested for the breast cancer gene but they wanted 3,500 for the results.  I could not lie, they told me if there was cancer in my family insurance would pick it up. I have none to report so no results.  Seems unfair.  IN any case your test might just do it for me.  I would like information.  Is that the best company, the one you used.  Does not seem Ancestry is complete enough.
