@beach-mom I love that hairstylist! Different business model so it works but what a nice thing to say and do.
Your father and mine must be related. He also left a penny tip when I was a kid while we were visiting Quebec. The waitress was also rude but I think it was frustration over the language barrier more than anything.

@Laura14 wrote:@ChynnaBlue If I'm a great server, which I was, why would I settle for a marginal flat rate when I can make more money elsewhere under the old system? I doubt the raise would cover what most good servers make and I never had a problem budgeting my living expenses. If I did a good job, I covered my bills and I did for two years.
Many of people are really good at their jobs and don't work in an industry with tips. If you prefer tips for your work, then by all means, work in a place where they allow for that.

@CrazyDaisy wrote:At the restaurant reported on, the price of the food was increased by 20%. So you are not actually eliminating the tip, you are being forced to pay a 20% tip regardless of the service you received.
I agree with that a thousand percent. Now you'll just be subjected to rude and inattentive service as a general rule. If wait staff has to WORK to EARN a good tip, you'll probably be more inclined to get good service.
I think doing away with tipping is a terrible idea--considering how rude so many young people are today and how much they feel entitled to the best of everything without having to earn it. Sorry, but I'm pretty disgusted with the some of these kids acts now.

Chances are that a good server will walk away with a lot less at the end of the night if this particular place does away with the tipping policy.

The servers will do the bare minimum, because there is no incentive.,

@ChynnaBlue we were talking about the restaurant industry which has a tipping for services rendered business model. I agree with the others who feel that great service and the people that provide it will choose to go elsewhere and stay with the old system rather than let management decide what is appropriate for everyone to make regardless of the job they do.

Agreed. And they'll be going somewhere where they can make tips.

I'd have to ask a few of the waitresses we know. College students/graduates. Right now, they seem happy re: their tips. $50 plus, part-time. (Small-ish restaurants, small staff, dinner hours). I'm guessing that the choice hours would be at the busy lunch or busy dinner hours. With a small staff. Wishing them all the best. p.s. And, yes, waitresses, etc. can earn very, very good tips. It's amazing, really. It's a person-to-person type of job, which is nice, if you have a good, happy personality.

Oh yeah, they get lots of $$ in tips at that restaurant. I wonder what the new salaries will be.

i have a few friends that work in waitering jobs. i have one friend who on saturday nights makes $300-$400 in tips alone (all tips are pooled....waiters and busboys are all tipped out of that total)........hard to imagine that a restaurant will be paying her that a day if they went with a "regular pay schedule."
