Many moons ago we had a summer reading list for English. There were about twelve books on it, as I recall. We read Kafka's The Metamorphosis, The Awakening (Kate Chopin) and Lord Jim (Joseph Conrad).
I could not get through Lord Jim. Boring! As it turns out, neither could my classmates. First, I started to read chapter by chapter, but nothing was happening. Then, I decided I could read every other chapter, but that was also boring. Then, we got together over the summer and divided the chapters up, but no one could get through them. Our teacher foiled our plan by making us write two papers about the book, and by Thanksgiving she still hadn't graded them. We were starting to get concerned, and then one day when we asked (again) she said they were so bad she couldn't even read them and she threw them out! We all laughed about it because it was a book we couldn't read, so we surely couldn't write anything analytical about it, and therefore we set her BS meter off so high that she couldn't read them!
Did you (or your children) have a summer reading list (for high school) and what was on it?
Did you read all of the books?
