Remember my Virtual 1st grader ?

For those who remember my posts and updates about Gramma here keeping him on track thru the first grade while in virtual learning due to covid. So now he's a big 2nd grader and back in school for classroom learning and doing very well. He's already received an award for friendship. I'm very proud of him. Unfortunately he's had strep throat and had to miss a couple of days but he's doing well now. Some would say his strep was due to not being in school around others and that may be so but at least 10 other children were in the nurses office the day he started feeling bad in school so they are all little germ catchers sharing the bugs  I'm sure the current and former/retired teachers on this forum will agree.   Woman LOL

Young elementary school children are walking Petri dishes. They seem to catch and spread the disease of the week quite efficiently. One year as an experienced teacher who should have developed some immunities I was on antibiotics 6 times.

I am glad your grandson is adjusting so well to the classroom. He will continue to thrive because he received a solid foundation for learning. Congratulations to you, too.

Re: Remember my Virtual 1st grader ?

@Goodie2shoes Sorry he's not feeling well, but I'm happy to hear he's doing well socially and academically. It's no secret that children get sick more when they enter the school environment for the first time and each subsequent year. Just a fact of life.

That being said, my DS had strep many times throughout his younger years. The pediatrician wanted to schedule a tonsillectomy, but he was never well enough to do it! He had strep 5 times when he was five, and that was the trigger for surgery. But it just couldn't happen.

Hope your grandson feels better soon.

My little guy was on antibiotics and he's much better, over the strep and back in school. Thanks

Yes I do remember your posts regarding your grandson.  i am so appreciative that schools are open and the children are able to socialize and receive the education from their teachers that they deserve and is so sorely needed.

Your love for your grandson is so evident, he is one lucky little guy to have a grammy like you.  I'm glad he recovered and was able to return to the classroom quickly.

Having taught special education (1st-3rd grade) for 28 years in public school before retiring in 2019, I can attest to the fact that germs spread like wildfire in school.  I'm glad your little one is feeling better, adjusting and doing well socially and academically.

He's at that age. Young kids catch everything and spread everything around to everyone.  It's only September so this is only the beginning.

Re: Remember my Virtual 1st grader ?

I remember being sick from October through to April once my daughter started pre-school.

She'd bring it home and share the germs.

I have never been so sick and so often sick as I was when I was teaching preschool.  Not only are little ones petri dishes but I swear and no one will ever convince me otherwise, that their little germs are stronger and more potent than an adults.  HAHA

Same here, @JudyL ! Don't these little kids ever wash their hands?

I'm so happy to be teaching college. They stay home when they are sick, and we no longer exchange papers.
