Re: Remedy To Prevent Shoplifting

Smash 'n grab crooks don't carry purses or bags. They use carts or anything else on hand to get it out of the store fast.

I doubt their "solution" will be much of a deterrent to thrives as it sounds like most of their merchandise wouldn't fit in a handbag or backpack anyway.  How are people stealing things like lamps and rugs?

@Kachina624 You wrote exactly what I was thinking. Of course we all want control of shop lifting, but I can't see how this will prevent theft of the items described.

So in this situation, I'd take it personally, if I was told I had to lock up my handbag. Besides, I wouldn't trust the safety of my items in their lockers, either. I'm sure they have more than one key for each locker. Who manages them?

@Mersha  This is okay with me especially since they sent an advisory letter in advance. Shoplifting is horrible and I'm thankful I don't work in retail.

Re: Remedy To Prevent Shoplifting

Many years ago a European Company opened a large retail store in our area. We went there on a regular basis. The products were wonderful and the prices were great. You were not allowed to take purses into the store. That was fine with me.

And the rules were clearly posted and if you didn't want to follow their rules. Well, you knew the consequences.

I also worked in retail for years. And saw LOTS of merchandise walk out of the store in large handbags and shopping bags. We were not allowed to follow them. So it got to be that our store was hit by professional and amateurs alike. Hated to take inventory because of all the missing product. Can't blame the company for closing the stores. It wasn't worth keeping them open.

Re: Remedy To Prevent Shoplifting

I've seen pics of shoplifters here that don't carry a purse they walk out of the store like TJ Maxx etc with arms full of clothes and bags. No one stops them!

We had some thieves at a large shopping mall where 2 security guards drew their weapons and one man had it taken away from him and ran out of the mall with his gun and I think shot someone.

These people know workers at a store aren't going to stop them, would you!

The porch pirates are all over the place and they rarely get caught and if they do nothing happens.

The metal detectors and all the rest are because of guns and other weapons. Every day no matter where we go we could become the victim of a mass shooting. But I don't stay home, I go to work and I go to movies and concerts and  everything else that I enjoy.

I would not be shopping in expensive stores anyway, not interested in having my handbag locked up.

I agree you shouldn't become a hermit out of fear, I was joking (maybe not obvious or funny)....so to avoid confusion I edited my previous post about being a hermit to include....

Edited to say, I'm joking....I don't really advise becoming a hermit out of fear, unless you are one and enjoy your hermit-ness, like me( I'm really only a semi-hermit....not a complete one )

IMO there are many places where I can purchase home furnishings. I don't spend a lot to get upscale anything in home furnishings. We are more on the modest side, so I may not even be interested in this store anyway, even if they allowed bigger bags.  I guess it would depend on how badly I wanted to shop somewhere, whether to comply or not.

That said, there is a concert venue we go to several times a year.  Last year they started their policy of no purses larger than a clutch wallet.  If anyone needed something larger, it couldn't be any larger than a gallon ziplock baggie and it had to be clear. No, it's not fun being unable to pair a nice Dooney or Patrica Nash to my outfit, but I comply with a clear stadium purse.

The clear and small bag policy at concerts and sporting events has been in place in most states for many years. It's mostly because of guns, knives, and terrorism.

No. I don't need anything that badly, I would shop in such a store. I shop in Tiffany's and Neiman's and I guarantee their merchandise is worth just as much and they don't lock up my handbag. The very idea is comical to me.🙃🤣

You are foolish. You can't guanantee anything. Tiffany's, NM, they have security camera, plain clothes security agents. Not a low margin business like what has been described.

Re: Remedy To Prevent Shoplifting

The DG store closest to me is near 2 schools and has a sign on the door saying no backpacks can be brought into the store.
