I got mine several months ago. I was able to schedule an appointment, so I was in and out in 30 minutes or less. There was almost an issue with my birth certificate, for reason I can't recall. But a consult with another employee deemed that all was well. My new RealID license is good for 7 years, I believe.

I can not understand this either. You can use a passport to board an international plane or cruise ship, but not to get a Real ID. It defies logic.
You can not use your DL + SS to board a plane or ship?!?!

Maybe it depends on the state cause I had to have all that you said were not necessary., when going from one state to another for a new license in that state-like if you are moving.
In other words, any name change at all had to show official documentation.
It is supposed to be the same things required thruout the nation.
However for a Real ID if you have a current social security card with your current name you should be ok.
That was probably confusing.

@on the bay, as I posted, I'm in California and had to provide my marriage certificate because of the name change.
I have always had the same SS card; it has my maiden name. Do people get updated SS cards?

Yes. You're supposed to if your name changes, as in a marriage. I got mine changed, although admittedly not for several years after I married.

I could use my passport as one form of identification--just not for the same category as the one that required the Social Security card.

@suzyQ3 -
Yes, I did get an updated ss card..
I probably could not have gotten even my regular drivers license if I hadn't. I don't know if it's different state to state but If you take everything you have ever had changed and it's documentation, maybe you'll get by. I would call first if you need an updated one for anything you are trying to get.

I had trouble getting mine too. So I went hunting and guess what I found?
If you're gonna say my old pay stubs and promotions from when I worked for the Federal Government way, way back in 1964 you would be right!
I found a bunch of them every time I got promoted or changed from Air Force to Army, etc.
They all have my social security number on them. I'm going to take them all in after the first of the year.
I did go on and get the regular card because I had to get something.
I figured I was buying myself some time. I know there are other things around here with my social security number on it.
I had my wedding license, you name it. I never throw anything away.
I found a check I wrote to the dentist when I got my teeth cleaned in 1963. I lived with my sister. Her name is also on the check and it was an apartment we lived in with her 4 children.
Incidentallly, it cost me $10 to get my teeth cleaned.

@kaydee50 : I have a passport and a passport card but I will get Real I.D. because I don't carry p.p. or p.p. I.D. all the time. What if I need to fly somewhere when I am already away from home? At least I always carry my drivers license. I am not due to renew drivers license until Dec. 2020 but I read that my state will extend your license for four years in a case such as mine!

@Lucky Duck wrote:DMV told me that I needed my birth certificate and marriage certificate for my current marriage. Previous marriage and divorce certificates are not needed since anything between birth and current marriage could be tracked. They may have said SS card too. I had to order replacement certificates because mine were lost in our house fire a few years ago. Replacement cost of birth & marriage certificates - $15 each. After I received the documents I went to DMV. It was packed. Luckily the line for "Real ID" was short and I was in and out in 15 or 20 minutes. Now I am waiting for my official Real ID to arrive in the mail. Should have it within 30 days. In the meantime I have a paper license. Cost of Real ID - $8. I am not happy about the picture that will be on my license. It looks like a mug shot.
@Lucky Duck I live in GA and this exactly like what i went through. I had my birth cert. my current drivers's license, my current marriage license and 2 forms of identity and address , a property tax form and my recent W-2. I also had a soc sec card that I obtained in a matter of 2 weeks from the Soc. Sec. office. No problems. I was in and out in 15 minutes. It is my understanding that in order to renew your driver's license in GA you must have this info. or you will not be given a driver's license. It is not a big deal if you go on line and read what documents you are required to present.
