@SydneyH  please let us know about your 95 year old grandmother's experience getting her Real ID. I'm assuming she no longer drives, so I'm interested how she obtained the ID with no birth certificate or drivers license. You said if she can do it, anybody can, yet many folks here have had issues obtaining one. Thanks!

I don't quite understand your hostility however........since you asked she petitioned the state for a picture identification, which is your right under certain circumstances.  You get a hearing and bring any documentation that they agree will cement your identity.  There's still no tired excuses for anyone to claim they are barred from getting proper identification, none.

A state picture ID is what many seniors who do not drive use for ID.  But it is NOT a Real ID.

I am sure everyone on this board has proper ID in many different forms it is getting the Real ID that is a challenging, time consuming and expensive process.

For people who live paycheck to paycheck and can not afford the luxury of time and money, the Real ID is a Real challenge.

I was talking to a girl today and her challenge was she has no utilities in her name.  She is a young girl from an 'at risk' demographic who was taken in by her best friend's family so that she would not be homeless.  Her mother who is in jail has no idea what happened with her SS card or birth certificate and the girl does not have the funds to pay for replacements or the means to travel to her birth state to go to the courthouse.  BUT she does have a picture ID.

I am not sure what people in 'difficult' situations are to do but I am seeing more and more issues with the process.

My grandmother didn't need a Real ID Driver's License because she had a Passport which she obtained with the State Identification card and she was not interested in driving.  I just take exception to people who refuse to take ownership over their own circumstances.  While I agree some people have challenges, most states make it quite clear what is needed.  If you fail to plan, that's not on the Boogie Man.  You know you will need proper identification to vote, buy property, secure employment, secure utilities, purchase alcohol or cigarettes, travel.  This isn't 'new'.

Thank you for answering @SydneyH. However, the topic is Real ID, which is harder to get and which you will now need if you want to fly, unless you have a passport, which not everyone had. Hence, my opinion that certain people are disadvantaged by this law.

I had my appointment for obtaining my Real ID this morning.  In and out in 15 minutes.  I made double sure I had the right paperwork and it couldn't have been easier.

If your state allows appointments, I highly recommend it. You breeze past every line and there was a kiosk to check in. A separate waiting area for appointments right in front of the desks. I barely sat down and my number was called.

Easiest license renewal I've ever done.

Getting a Real I.D is easy. You bring what they tell you to bring. I made an appointment and was in and out in an hour. I have a passport but I had to renew my license anyway so I just went ahead and got the Real I D. It has a  yellow bear with a star on it.

Wrong is still wrong just because you benefited from it.

I can't believe that some are baffled by the Real ID-compliant requirement which takes effect in 2020.

Doesn't it make sense that, when standard drivers licenses are issued regardless of status, everyone else will have to obtain an enhanced license for domestic air travel or entry into federal buildings?

The standard license has been rendered virtually useless for everything but basic identification.

@Abrowneyegirl  I had to go back to the DMV three times before I had all the correct paperwork and also being stressed out just waiting 45 minutes for a clerk to tell me I needed my state emblem birth certificate, not the hospital issued one, but I did get my enhanced drivers license finally.
