Just got mine in Michigan. All I took was my current driver's license and valid passport. They tested my eyes and a woman came out ( must have worked for Immigration) after having my paperwork for a few minutes. She asked me a few questions about my passport, such as when I had gotten it, had I travelled on it? and then handed it all to the young man behind the Secretary of State desk. They took my picture.

The new license/ID came in a paper sleeve that it is suppose to stay in so the info on it cannot be stolen.

That was it...nothing else had to be shown.

I did have an appointment which I had made on line.

Do people update their name on their SS card?  This made me laugh because I do volunteer work with seniors that involves helping them apply for benefits online as many do not use/have computers.

I can say less than 50% of the women have SS in their current names.  Some even joke that they have been "_____" married name longer than they were 'maiden name' but they never changed their cards.  Some of these women are in their 90's

I understand yo don't need one if your passport is still good.  My is good until 2026.  I will be 90 then if alive, so I'm not going to try for one.

I have all three marriage and divorce papers and death certificates.  Need a cart to bring everything in if I were getting one.

I'm surprised that women are going for years and years without changing their names with SSA.   The IRS caught it  when the name on the tax return was not the same name associated with the given social security number.

I was thinking the same thing.  When I got married I took a day off to do all the name changing.  I went to the SS office and the DMV to change everything.

I was told at DMV that in late 2021 EVERYONE will need a real ID even those of us with passports.
I asked them if they mean children too when they say "everyone". They were unsure......... I will believe it when I see it. But just something to keep in mind and be aware of.

Personally I think if everyone is going to be required to have it then it should be free or less than $5.
In my state, it is $30. Combine that with the cost of the driver's license renewal it can be very expensive for people.

do people who come here from another country have to get one also to get benefits?  It is not making sense.  In all my 80+ years things have  gone from bad to worse.  As a U.S. citizen from birth and those that chose to be citizens , why do we have to be out through hoops  that we have a right.  Why not make him non citizens get real Id?

Same thing happened to me.  Was told needed a social security card in addition to all the other things they required.  Went home, got card, went back, got a different clerk - gave him my card and he said, well, you really didn't need that.  What?  Guess it depends on the person you get.
