For some reason I cannot reply to original thread but I want to add my 2 cents.
The main reason that the donations are made at end of year is for tax purposes.
Let's say you had $20,000,000. You leave $10,000,000 to charity and that leaves you the ability to leave $10,000,000 (as a couple...$5,000,000 each) to family etc. without tax consequences to them.
They are doing this purely for their own gain and can use the remainder to further promote their agendas. Example: they can leave it to causes that support conservative or liberal causes.
Thank goodness they believe in preserving the planet and leave much to conservation groups.
They leave a lot to Planned Parenthood which I personally do not like.
