I'm chuckling because I live in CT and love it here despite the people who are constantly threatening to leave because of the taxes. I don't mean that personally towards you, it's just that I was going to post about that and I see the taxes have already been aired.
My philosophy is you pay taxes wherever you live, so I'd rather live a little more frugally and stay right here. States with no or low taxes do not appeal to me as anyplace I want to live. Our weather is moderate compared to other northern states, we're in between NYC and Boston, I love visiting the beaches next door in RI. My son got a great education, we have many good hospitals within driving distance, and so many great places for outdoorsy, active people.
Maybe it's the area of CT I live in, but we find much to enjoy here. I'm not retiring anywhere else. My only wish is that summers haven't gotten so darned hot and humid; our summers used to be beautiful for most of the season.

@PilatesLover Agree with you. We're not far from you in NY and just to get away we've rented a house in CT with some family for a week this summer. The northeast is where we've chosen to live for the past 40 or 50 years and would never move. ETA, I've never lived anywhere where the taxes weren't high. Salaries are comparable.

We live in New York and it's a beautiful state to live in. We are a few minutes from a beach and an easy commute to Manhattan. Taxes are astronomical, though @Calcgirl .
We lived in New Jersey for more than thirty years and raised our children there. I was very happy living there too.

@sunshine45 What's not to love about Maryland???
You can be at the ocean, Chesapeake Bay, and spectacular mountains quickly....not to mention our wonderful farming areas.
I am between Baltimore and DC and those places have a multitude of wonderful things to offer.
We certainly have some of the best hospitals and doctors in the country.
Several of our counties have top schools in the country.
On a down note, where I live, houses go on the market and they are sold within a day or two. You can purchase a fixer upper for $500,000. It is very $$$$$$$$$$$.

I'm going to throw in a random tidbit. I used to have a small round stained glass piece with this saying on it.
"No matter where you go, there you are." Mary Englebreit.

it is always great to know i can head to the beach and be there in under 3 hours usually......or any other area inside of the state! also, about an hour to DC, about 2 hours to philadelphia, about three hours to NYC. decent public transportation with buses, light rail, train, and major airport not far away.....plus plenty of uber/lyft around.
i am probably in a different area than you. we have a large selection of housing that can range from the relatively inexpensive to the very expensive, depending on what you are looking for. i love my home and the perfect size of land that it is on, but there are condos, townhomes, apartments, row homes, and single family homes close by also.

May I add we have Crabby Tots at Rams Head. Those alone should put us in the top 5.

Yes, loving those crabs and crabmeat, especially when you can get it fresh from the dock from that morning's catch! OMG nothing like it and yes, our Old Bay seasoning. I am originally from Baltimore City (love) but am now near the coast and also love it for many reasons!
