First, do NOT click on any link in an email from Target without checking its legitimacy. Hover your mouse over the link, look at the bottom of your computer and see if it does indeed show that it's from Target. I am suspicious because of the late timing-

I say this because I did shop at Target, used a debit card, and have NOT received an email from them. Maybe others have?

Second, check your credit card statements and your bank statements to see if there are any charges made to Target during that time period. If there aren't, there is no need to worry. If a charge shows up to Target then call the company that issued the card.

My credit union sent notification to me that I was part of the group and would be issued a new debit/credit card. I have already received it. Many of the banks did this a long time ago. I received my notification within a week of the news story way back in December.

This isn't limited to charges or POS transactions at Target. The hackers obtained the info. and could use it anywhere. People have had their entire bank accounts wiped out from charges and debit card transactions being made at various other sites.

Wiped out? Aren't people covered by their CC company?

Debit cards are linked to your bank account. If someone gets ahold of your debit card number, they could wipe out your bank account completely. Yes the money will eventually be replaced but it's a hassle until that happens.

I've had my debit card breached and used fraudulently. Hundreds of dollars were taken out of my checking account. This happened over the weekend. My bank notified me Monday morning but because my account was overdrafted from fraudulant transactions and my card not usable, I had no access to my checking account all weekend long. My money was put back Monday afternoon but I had to fill out paperwork with the bank before they would do that.

It's a mess when this happens. I'm guessing it's somewhat easier when it happens with an actual credit card.

The credit and debit card numbers obtained in this breach were selling the black market for as little as $20.00 per card number. Imagine what could happen to people from this. And the worst part is, a blogger revealed the breach before Target ever did!

This is what i keep trying to say - what may or may not be bought with the card is very minor - it is the identity theft using the incripted information that is the problem. They can put you hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt depending on your credit capabilities.WAKE UP PEOPLE - this is way worse than someone just using your cc - much much worse. And just getting a new card does nothing to protect you.

I understand that. But if she doesn't remember whether or not she shopped there during that time period, checking her accounts will give her that information. If she didn't shop there using a card of any type, then she doesn't have to worry.

If she did shop there and used a card, then that card should be replaced.

It goes without saying that she and everyone else needs to keep a close eye on all of their banking activities, credit reports, etc. ALL the time.

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

I check all my accounts frequently.

We are so susceptible now. It doesn't matter where you shop either.

By the time the media gets ahold of the information, it's too late.

Check everything is my advice.

Yes this portion of it may be ""minor"" but it's a hassle. for someone to have their checking account wiped out and have access to NO money for a few days until the money is replaced isn't minor to someone trying to put gas in their car or food on their table.

But I agree there are going to be many more problems with this. I edited my post to say that these card numbers have reached the black market and were being sold in batches of 1 million for as little as $20.00 per card number. And then the stolen personal information on top of that!

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

I don't really know the statistics, but I think it's smaller purchases rather than opening huge lines of credit into the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I do know it's a huge hassle to deal with whether it's $100 or $1000 or $10,000...

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

I know the first breach against my account (not from this) was for a little over $500.00. Luckily the company the criminals tried to purchase from caught it as fraud and never allowed the transaction to clear. They were able to drop the hold off my checking account the next day but I had to close that debit card and get a new one.

The next time it happened it was several hundred dollars and all transactions were made back to back. Another hassle.

But I'd be more concerned about my personal info. being stolen.

Absolutely, buying something at target on your credit or debit card is not the real problem. Its your credit and debit info that they have now. Its not the cc info, its YOUR CREDIT INFORMATION. It can be accessed today or next year, you don't know when. Thats the real problem . Not that you used your cc at target.

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

I had phone calls on my AmEX and I swear my Target dates weren't involved. But then I did have an order at Nordstrom. Now I have to wait for a new card. An unknown 500 something and 700 something charge. Now I have a return to Nordstrom and wonder how will they credit my original payment. Oh lovely, another phone call and punching numbers on the phone for the menu options. Smiley Sad
