Questions on Target Security Breach

When I first heard about this I thought that I was not affected because I was very sure that I had not been in Target during the period of time that the breach occurred. As time went by I was even more sure that I had escaped since I received no notification from them of any involvement. Other people appear to have been notified by Target several weeks ago and I heard nothing. Now today I have a E mail from them saying that I am entitled to the free credit monitoring because my information was stolen. What I want to know is why is this the first notification I have received? Did other shoppers receive notification from Target when this was first discovered? I know some posters here contacted their credit card companies and were issued new cards. Was that based on a E mail from Target received some time ago??? The E mail from Target doesn't even say whether the card that was compromised was a debit or a credit card and if a credit card which one. I have several credit cards am I supposed to cancel all of them??. Why am I being notified so late and how can I find out which card was hacked???

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

I think they have been discovering more and more as time has gone on.

But scammers have also been sending out official looking e-mails, phishing for info.

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

First, do NOT click on any link in an email from Target without checking its legitimacy. Hover your mouse over the link, look at the bottom of your computer and see if it does indeed show that it's from Target. I am suspicious because of the late timing-

I say this because I did shop at Target, used a debit card, and have NOT received an email from them. Maybe others have?

Second, check your credit card statements and your bank statements to see if there are any charges made to Target during that time period. If there aren't, there is no need to worry. If a charge shows up to Target then call the company that issued the card.

My credit union sent notification to me that I was part of the group and would be issued a new debit/credit card. I have already received it. Many of the banks did this a long time ago. I received my notification within a week of the news story way back in December.

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

We were notified by experion that our card info had been accessed and that an alert was placed on our credit accounts with all the reporting agencies. So if anyone tries to open a new account using our info we will be notified. At the time we were in the process of buying a new car and they did put a hold on the process until w were called and varified that it was indeed us buying that car. the problem with these breaches is not what they may buy with your card info - that would be paid for but they take all the info that is incripted on the cards and open accounts - take out huge loans etc. - essentially steal your identity - and put you deeply in debt. So that is why the credit companies are protecting us - so no one can do that.

My guess is this is a scam. Someone just posted in the beauty forum that her daughter got a message that her Target account had been compromised and her daughter doesn't shop at Target.

Does ""Target"" have your email address? This could be a scam email.

I never received any information from Target and dealt directly with my credit union.

This isn't limited to charges or POS transactions at Target. The hackers obtained the info. and could use it anywhere. People have had their entire bank accounts wiped out from charges and debit card transactions being made at various other sites.

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

Directly from the Target website which I see has the https. which means its a secured site with https in the address about the credit/debit security breach. The https link is right in the center of the regular Target home page with the words: important notice:data incident involving certain guest information learn more..

On the far right of _26_11_2013|||the link I am posting there is an entire linked section to various topics and e mails sent to customers with the dates they were sent to customers about the breach.

The credit card company directly called my Mom to issue new cards. But I don't think she ever signed up to receive their emails.

Re: Questions on Target Security Breach

Just fyi, if you did have issues over this breach, google Target Class Action and your area and see if anything comes up. There have been multiple class actions filed already over this.
