At one time many years ago the owner of the salon wasn't tipped. Now I don't know any owner of a salon who would decline a tip. I use to go to a salon where I used the owner, I offered him a tip he declined. A couple years later I offered a tip again, he took it.

The salon I used to go to was also very pricey with the various steps, master, etc., and the prices went up with their experience, I have found that when they have somebody else do my shampoo it is because they are running so far behind. I paid at the counter when I left, not to the stylist (that's how it was done at that salon) and included my tip there.
That same stylist left that salon and went into one of those salon suites where there's a ton of various people with their own little salons: hair, waxing, nails, etc., so essentially she owns her salon. I still tip her.

I agree with this. It makes sense in a restaurant, since they make less than minimum wage, but a hair salon? They make a good wage without tipping.
Totally agree here. Completely and totally. But still I do. My friend's stylist did her hair and another friend's and used to complain all the time that the other friend never tipped.

I agree with those that say why should the customer be burdened with the math?
My recent covid hair experience, once salons were able to open up, the stylist or colorist does all the work. They do the shampoo, etc. Covid19 rules. Less people in salons these days.
BTW: I do go to a high end salon.

I used to go to a big-deal stylist who judged hair competitions etc. He was great at haircuts and color and was the shop owner.
I always gave him a good tip. I once asked him if that offended him because he was the owner and he said: Honey! I'm NEVER offended by money!"
He was wonderful and I miss him. He worked hard to keep me looking good, I was able to tip, so I tipped him. I appreciated what he did.
If you resent tipping someone, you are going to the wrong person.

In my area, most stylists are self-employed and rent a chair inside a salon. While there is obviously someone who owns the salon, he/she receives rent and does not get a percentage of what the other stylists do.
The salon I went to previously was owned by 3 women and they were the only 3 who worked there. I tipped her 20%. Now the woman I go to rents a chair inside a salon and I also tip her 20%. There is no shampoo person or assistant. She takes care of everything.
The only problem I have with giving someone the tip and letting them figure it out is I don't trust that the person I gave the tip to would share as intended. I would tip the person who cut my hair 20% on the cost of the haircut and then I would tip the assistant 20% on the amount over and above that.

It's just her (I like that it's only the two of us) and she charges less than half of what I paid before.
I've been tipping her but my friend who told me about her said not to tip ...no one does...but I don't feel comfortable not doing so....why does this have to be complicated?!!
@haddon9 I would tip as well and I don't understand your friend telling you not to. If you are comfortable tipping, continue to do so. If you friend doesn't want to tip, she doesn't have to. That's on her.

At my salon, she is a widow, and of course they will on retirement get very little SS, I not only tip big, I take a gift each time . If I hear her say she saw something on QVC, I buy it for her. She's been doing my hair for over 30 years, she's a friend, with not a lot of money, so I try to brighten her life. Makes me feel extra special to make her happy, and I'm not rich either. I only go every 6 weeks. That's why I tip.

I think of this more as giving gifts for a friend then tipping a professional. (Which is lovely, by the way!)

I don't mind tipping the owner of his salon. He pays rent, utilities, heat/ac, insurance, equipment, supplies, payroll for his receptionist and others, etc.
Yes, some hair stylists do make a lot of $$ but owners have expenses, too.
It's not like what you pay is all profit, obviously, but I think people forget that private salon owners carry debt, too.
