Question for frequent travelers

We are going to London and Paris for our anniversary and getting excited about the trip but I had a question. Some people have told us to get some currency for England and France before we leave and others have said to wait until we get there. Someone told my husband about having problems in Europe with American credit cards with magnetic strips. They said a person in a store or restaurant can just enter the numbers but the card may not work at an ATM. What do you suggest? I hate to fly so have not done much traveling. Thanks!
