My father recently had a colostomy. He is recovering right now in the nursing home. He is very frustrated because the bag has "blown off" three times so far--once in the hospital and twice in the nursing home and made a major mess. He says he will be afraid to go out in public in case this happens. Is this happening because they are just letting it get too full or what? They have not taught the family anything about colostomy care yet, but I have watched the videos at the Hollister website on them. It says to empty the bag when they get 1/3 to 1/2 full, but from what I've seen, his bag seems to get more full than that before they empty it. Also, are there any products out there that can protect someone from an embarrasssing accident if something comes loose? Is this sort of mishap common? I really don't feel good about his nurse teaching us colostomy care. She has a real attitude toward it herself. Thank you!
