Question about squirrels

I'd think I'm talking to mistriT,,,,,this morning it was raining, yet the birds and squirrels came for their peanuts . @ 6:30 I saw "earl' the squirrel waiting. jays came and so did those crackels (crackens???) and cardinals and others. LOVE watching them. my question is,,,,I heard the weirdest sound,,,like a chicken with larengitis,,,,was that a squirell???? I'd heard it the other night at 4AM and wondered what it was. do squirrels make noise regularly??? I worry that something is hurting them. not anything I can do., but mother nature is beginning to awaken me in the night and I don't like it!!! I'd love to know what I've been hearing. It's an unpleasant sound. THEN I thought maybe they were g i g g ing??? let me know anything info you have on these sounds, please. Thanx
