Question about banks

We're thinking of switching banks. A lot of local ones have opened here lately, and other, more established ones are getting swallowed up by mega banks. Do you bank with a small, local one, or do you prefer a well-known bank like Bank of America? Are you happy? Why or why not? It makes me mad that we have to pay fees to use OUR money! I got into a discussion with someone yesterday about this, and it started me thinking!
