Question about Twitter

I use Facebook but never have done the Twitter thing. I recently signed up because there were some issues I wanted to stay up-to-date on news wise. I made my account "private" because I don't care about having "friends" or following anyone personally or having anyone follow me. I have received at least ten requests from others who want to follow me. What the heck is it that about? Why would anyone want to follow someone they don't know? I just don't get it.
