Re: Question about IP addresses.

@KathyPet wrote:

If I have a smart phone, a tablet and a

1st question: your network of devices is assigned a single IP address by your service provider. In fact if you google: what is my IP? Your IP address will show up on that goiogle search. But this is an external IP address.

2nd question: if your user ID and IP address was banned on one device, it is banned on all devices using that IP address.

2A question: going to a hotel or a Starbucks which have wi-fi capability, you need to log onto their network through your devices before you can get onto the Internet. If you are banned by user ID and use a different IP address, you would still be banned.

Seeing this unbanned poster is asking this question, I am surmising the OP is asking for someone else who is/was banned.

Carry on.

Okay this makes sense now.  BUT couldn't they make up a new account?   You have a point.  Why would this question be asked unless by someone that has been banned?  Things that make you go huuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmm

          @BalletBabe,  To have a posting account on the Community forums you need a "customer account" on the shopping area of the website first.   The 2 are linked to each other.    To create a brand new forum posting account, a person would have to set up a new shopping account,  add a nickname, and then sign onto the Community.    If your IP address is static, and you've done nothing to change it, you'd still be identified with the same address and you'd find yourself blocked from posting.   In today's world, many people use cellular connections which have changing IP addresses...  or they use public WiFi connections... or even proxy servers.    As a result, it's much easier to bypass IP blocks and much harder for websites to pin a person to one IP address and keep them out if the person is determined to find a way in.    That makes moderation trickier.

Re: Question about IP addresses.

I don't know why the question was asked, but I did not get the impression that @KathyPet was asking for any nefarious reason.  I assumed she was just wondering how banned posters keep coming back.

Re: Question about IP addresses.

          It's fine, @BalletBabe!   Really, no apology necessary.   I'm sorry if I made it appear you (or anyone here) had been banned.    This written word is so limiting, so it's easy to misunderstand the tone or meaning sometimes.   No problems.   Have a nice evening!

The short answer, without details, is that all IP addresses are not static, and when they're not static it's much more difficult to pin an ID to a single IP address than can be blocked. You may block one but the poster may have a large potential "supply."
