OK...my brother and family are Jewish, so obviously they are celebrating Hanukkah. It is my understanding that Hanukkah gelt (money) is given to the children. I have done that for years, but now the "children" are all college grads...some even have post grad degrees.
I know a gift comes from the heart, but I'm wondering...is there an age when Hanukkah gelt is no longer appropriate? Or do I just keep on giving? They do send us Christmas gifts. The money isn't the issue. My sister-in-law who has been Jewish all her life is just very much a stickler about what is appropriate according to the Jewish rules. I hate to ask this question.
I have offended her in the past by doing things that I thought were appropriate...e.g. when they got engaged, I sent a "Best Wishes on your Engagement" card and was told that Jewish people considered it bad luck to receive that card before they officially announced it...I've made a lot of other little errors too.
Can someone tell me if I should still send Hanukkah gelt? Is it just to the children, or to the adults too? Thank you!
