Re: QVC cuts 100 jobs at West Chester HQ

QVC is publicly owned and management is accountable to its shareholders--and this is the way it should be. Layoffs are necessary sometimes. I certainly feel sad for anybody losing their job, but--in this case--it's clearly not personal. I hate to see folks automatically badmouth management whenever they hear that simple word "layoffs." Their responsibility is to the owners of the company (i.e. shareholders) and this is a beatiful thing....free enterprise; capitalism-in-action.

From what I've observed over the years, QVC should make some job cuts, but those should come from the top tiers of management--the ones who have brought them to this level of sometimes unwatchable "entertainment" and ridiculous pricing/shipping games.

Agree, but that isn't how it works. The CEO will probably get a bonus for cutting jobs. And if they are moving to west coast with production, too, eventually, then entertainment and tackiness will rule, quality which already us down won't matter at all, and you can expect a new array of phony hosts who will all have that strange L.A. plastic surgery look with oversize lips and boobs and waxy drawn-up faces frozen with Botox. Think vendor L. Rinna (Renna?) and you get the idea.

Well, didn't they just open a new distribution warehouse in California? They create new jobs and then often times, they have to cut them elsewhere.

I wonder how many of those jobs that were cut were full time so included healthcare benefits? I wonder what jobs were kept? I wonder if they create new positions  if they will be less than full time positions. All things that make you go hmmmmmmm.......

That's how I read it.

They're changing their business model and location.

Those let go are  being given severance.  Lots of places just give you a couple weeks notice and a "good luck!"

Yes my supervisor, VP  position, worked 25 years, one of the veterans , who started this company. My company  is  big, countrywide but not that big like QVC, but still big enough. So was laid off within 5 minutes, no notice and no any severance. And company busy but sure enough they started outsourcing job out of country. She will be so happy to get severance, at list something, but no, not in company policy. She was outstanding employee , full of knolege , great personality.i don't know who cried more : her or us. She got new job , not right away and for less money.

People aren't people to many (maybe most?) companies anymore, not like they once were.  Company profits and shareholder dividends are King.  Employees are just drags on their profits.

Sad, but true.

Re: QVC cuts 100 jobs at West Chester HQ

A couple of things:

*West Chester is a beautiful area. Large homes, excellent schools, GORGEOUS botanical gardens and QVC is there. I had NO idea QVC was there until we were looking to possibly relocate to the PA area (not doing so now). Many people commute to Philly by train from West Chester as well as to parts of MD and DC (believe it or not). I always found it odd that this huge home-shopping channel was located in suburbia.

* Impressed that QVC is offering job replacement guidance as well as severance pay; I know of NO ONE who has received that in the past....10 years? Bravo, QVC.

* There are hundreds of jobs NOW available in CA as well as Canada. It's horrible for those losing jobs; it's normal for a business to open and close as is necessary for the overall health of the company. If they NEED a location in CA, then they may not need to keep as many in PA- is the company supposed to keep them on because....they're nice? No business survives doing that. It IS just business.

*If QVC were to shift their studios to a different location, that would mean all the hosts would have to relocate; real estate nightmare, if you think about it. MORE families would be out of work because how many can relocate? How many can AFFORD to relocate? Perhaps the cutting of 100 jobs was the LEAST damaging to the overall number of people employed; don't know.

*Regarding the comments in the link: what I found interesting was the reference to teachers and unions. I gather there are issues in the area/state that the posters appear to be part of the QVC job cuts; anyone know what the point was about that?

@You are so right. I can tell a lot about this, but nothing new, just so much pain. I work for  this company 20 years already, it was great company, great people to work with. But @ 10 years ago company was sold, and new people started to do very corporate America. All all employee started  disappear. About 2 years ago they started moving jobs out of country. But nobody thinking that they can do this to her. I guess nobody safe anymore.i cannot tell more but just say that now they have problem with job done outside, some temps sitting and fixing. I am not even start commenting this.Just a lot of pain since they killed great company and going nowhere.
