I am recovering from foot surgery on 12/16/15 and considering retiring in the next 6 months. I am not one to sit all day watching TV so I'm looking for something to keep me a little busy but not to busy b/c I will also be babysitting my new grandson. Does anyone who has retired have a part time business? I'm not looking to be a Walmart greeter or worker (nothing against it but not for me). At one time I had a gift basket business, had fairly good sales, website and all but because I had a full time job and working the gift basket biz alone I could not keep it going. I'm thinking about it again but wondering if their are any other retired entrepreneurs out there and what's worked for you. Thanks

Reinvent yourself. Think what you like to do. Be creative. How about petsitting? Think of your skills. There are legitimate computer jobs online. There are women business owners online in groups who might be a resource to tap into. Use the services of SCORE, a free information source of retired business owners. Also, universities are a resourse. Imagination is your only limit.

Many major Corporations out source their A/R and people work the accounts from home. Of course, you would need a designated phone but it is good $$ while you work in your PJ's,

I am a former small business owner who sold the business, which was my husband's passion, after he passed in 2008. Since then, I took a couple part time administrative jobs that eventually grew in scope and encroached on my free time, so I quit those.
I happenstanced myself self into a place where the court appoints me as the personal rep for estates who need someone to dig for assets and close the estate. I can pick and choose how much work I want to do, I love the detail work and it challenges my brain to keep sharp. I also do a smattering of graphic design and marketing work for a small construction company, both things I love to do.
I suggest you look for something that lets you exercise a bit of your passion and that challenges your intellect in some way. Put the word out that you are looking, network. You might be amazed at the exciting doors that will open for you.

Lots of good points up above ..... think "free lance". And don't forget ..... If you aren't needing health benefits, more things are possibilities for you.

Have you forgotten how much time and energy it takes to care for new baby? I don't thiink you'll have as much time as you think you'll have. Maybe home daycare would work for you? My mom never needed the money but she had a hard time when her "mothering" days were over. She solved it by starting a home daycare. It began as favor a friend's daughter but blossomed into her careing for 2-3 babies of working moms. She only took babies between 3 months and 2.5 hears and not more than 3 at a time. She eventually got a license and she did charge the prevailing rate. We laughged because she'd spend the money on her own grandchildren....and QVC...lol She did that for 10 years, from around the age of 62 to 72 and then she retired. She always said it kept her young, active, fit and involved with the world.

Take 1 of your hobbies and make it a business. I did it with 3 of mine. Supplements my SS and pension checks.

Crystaltree, you are probably right about my busy time for babysitting my grandson but I will still have a lot of free time, not interested in starting a home day care but thanks for your input, much appreciated. I want to do something crafty if I can find my niche. Thanks again
