I get flu shots because even if I contract it, I know it will affect me in a milder way than if I didn't have one. There is something very scary about having a respiratory flu and getting an asthma attack at the same time. I support all immunizations to prevent epidemics of diseases that were once all but eradicated until suddenly non medical people decided then knew it all. Now we have a recurrence of whooping cough, chicken pox, etc.
I had the flu last year and it was miserable. I got a nice side order of bronchitis to go with it, too. I ended up on three meds plus an inhaler, so I can't even imagine how that would be for someone with asthma or any COPD. It was really terrifying not being able to breathe.
I'm getting the vaccine this year as I'm not anxious for an encore. I stayed home when I was sick, and I didn't much care what my employer thought. I'd rather not have to miss more work, either.
I agree with your point about the diseases that have made a comeback since so many have opted not to avail themselves of the preventive vaccines. I simply don't get it.

Not everyone does.
Jack LaLanne had an extremely strong immune system. He juiced his food for years and his body was just amazing. Yet, he died from pneumonia. I know he was 96 but when you stop and think how many people make it to age 100 and over who are not like him...who do not exercise, who do not juice their food or ever eat anything special.....it's a big awakening. I have a great aunt who is 105 and I have no idea how she is still on God's green earth; never been an athlete or taken any special care with what she ate and certainly never washed her hands fastidiously.

Are people going to start wearing stickers like they do after they vote?

Well, yeah, he WAS 96.
But looking great and juicing your food doesn't mean you have a strong immune system.
The proof is not getting ill.

His lung and heart function were stronger than the average person and certainly stronger than my Aunt who is 105. Next time I speak with her I'm going to ask if she had a flu shot all her life and then later a pneumonia shot as well. I have no idea but now want to know.

The proof of a strong immune system is resistance to disease.
Athlete or not.
But again, he was 96. Not too shabby.

Listen, I cried when Jack LaLanne died. I thought if anyone could make it to 100 it would be him. Yet he succumbed to pneumonia!!! Wow, unbelievable.

Just learned that yes my 105 year old Great Aunt does get a flu shot every year but didn't think she ever got a pneumonia shot (didn't remember).
‎10-17-2014 09:30 PM
I used to get a flu shot and always ended up getting a mild form of flu days later. I haven't received a flu shot in years and haven't had the flu either. Go figure!
