On average, 124 people die of the flu every year.

Re: Putting It Into Perspective....

Here we go again, with the flu shot zealots demanding what others are to do with their bodies. If you feel the vaccines are safe, then take them, but don't fool yourself into thinking that you can control/shame/bully others into doing it too. Sick people (with flu and other common illnesses) need to stay home, and quit drugging up their kids to send them to school (when they don't register a fever, they let them in, so parents who don't want to miss work give the meds and drop them off at school).

Just because more people are afflicted by/die from flu doesn't diminish the fact that we need to pay attention to Ebola, and do what is necessary to stop it in it's tracks. It just hasn't gotten as prevalent as the flu YET.

I don't demand you get a flu shot, I don't care if you get it or not. But you might warn those around you that you don't care if you pass it on to them. They should have the right to know you could be a danger to them.

And just because we are aware of Ebola doesn't mean we can't also be aware of the threat of flu.

Most people can think of more than one thing at a time.

The problem with the flu and how it is spread is that a lot of people especially working people do not stay home when they get sick....just last week one of the young guys in our office came to work with a fever for 2 days in a row.....last winter one of our co-workers came to work everyday and sat at her desk wrapped in a blanket barely able to hold her head up (admitted she tested positive for the flu) yet she refused to stay home because she didn't want to use up any of her paid time for sickness....this is why things spread like wild fire in this country!!

Yes, it's very interesting. A couple of weeks ago.I had a bad cold...really bad chest congestion and lots of coughing. No way would I go to work like that...hacking all over the place. I don't understand people that do this. Employers should discourage this, but they don't. You are given the stink eye if you call in sick.
I worked in transcription for a big hospital in our area. Calling in sick could get me into trouble very quickly:/

Yikes tansy, you mean the hospital expects its workers to report for work even if they are ill?

Yes, but I was not in contact with any patients at all. Not sure how sick leave was handled in other departments there.

Re: Putting It Into Perspective....

I have asthma, so my respiratory system is somewhat compromised. As a teacher, I was constantly exposed to all kinds of influenza most of the time. I get flu shots because even if I contract it, I know it will affect me in a milder way than if I didn't have one. There is something very scary about having a respiratory flu and getting an asthma attack at the same time. I support all immunizations to prevent epidemics of diseases that were once all but eradicated until suddenly non medical people decided then knew it all. Now we have a recurrence of whooping cough, chicken pox, etc.

I'm no more a danger to others than you. Just because you take the shot, you still can transmit the germs from others and surfaces to those around you. As for having the flu, I haven't had it since I was a kid. I'm choosing to let my immune system do what it is designed to do. Not everyone needs all vaccines. It should be based on an individual basis, according to each persons health, exposure etc.
