What do you ladies think of parents helping young married adults pay their way through college by providing them with a basement apartment in the parents' home? That eliminates rent (and internet, heat, cable, etc.) and supplements food costs for the young people.
In this time of skyrocketing college tuition, with so many young people starting their lives heavily in debt, is this a good idea? I know previous generations helped out young couples but that sort of fell out of favor.
The young couple I am thinking of are twenty-one and twenty-two years of age. They are very much in love and wish to be married before indulging in a physical relationship. (I am not interested particularly in how people feel about that. It is right for the couple in question, in keeping with their moral outlook.) Neither is finished with college and both work part-time and have multiple merit-based scholarships, but not enough to support an independent lifestyle.
Assuming the house is large enough for privacy for all people concerned, is this a good idea? Is it common?
