Purse.

When I was little I said "pockabook."

Me too, but I still say pockabook. It's a New York, maybe New Jersey thing. All my friends say pockabook too.

Both grandmas said pocket book. That was YEARS ago, they would be well into their 100's if alive.

I always said purse, my mom too. I have never heard anyone I know say pocketbook.

I can't believe so few votes for ""bag.""

I never understood the 'pocketbook' reference. You don't put it in your pocket and it's not a book. I wonder what the origin of that term was, as it doesn't make sense to me.

I can see handbag because it makes sense. Purse - I get that, as that is what it is.

Me too. I first heard "pocketbook" when i was 19, and met someone from New Jersey for the first time. I thought it was hilarious.

To me, a purse is something to put loose change in.

My grandma called it "pocketbook". Since I'm not 60+, it's a purse or handbag.

Pocketbook, hand bag or bag. Never purse; a purse is used for coins (change purse.)

When I was in college -- many moons ago -- I referred to my bag as a purse. I told a British student that I would be ready to go as soon as I got my purse. When I returned with a giant shoulder bag he laughed and laughed -- to him a "purse" was a little wallet -- or what we call a "change purse".

I now say "bag", although sometimes still I say "purse", "handbag" or even "pocketbook" (!), but mostly "bag". (Although sometimes my DH thinks I mean a shopping bag.)

Well I am sure you have heard the one about 'you can't make a purse out of a sow's ear' regardless of how "young" you are.
