We've always had a cocker spaniel and have always had a pool. Most dogs love the water, the problem is many of their ears do not. I cannot begin to count how many ear infections we battled that were attributed to the pool. Be careful if your dog has covered ears. The water gets in and it's tough to get it out.

You can use a mixture of alcohol and white vinegar and put a couple of drops in each ear when they come out of the water. The alcohol help dry them and the white vinegar works to stop any bacteria from growing.

Thank you for your reply. That did work for some of our dogs. Our present companion spends once a month at the vet over his ears. We've tried more antibiotics, both oral and drops. Just when you think his ears are clear, he gets groomed, or gets a bath, or jumps in the pool. He is a (handsome) devil.

Our last dog (Lab) loved to swim! He was a rescue, and the 1st day we had him he found the pond all on his own and went for a swim. Most days in the spring/summer/fall we would come home from work and he'd be soaking wet...and sometimes in the winter, too, if it wasn't freezing!

There is a doggy day care not too far from our town that has a pool, too. There are not as many dogs, though.

They sure looked like they were having a blast. {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

How funny! That's nice that he could swim whenever he wanted to -- even in the winter.

My parent's dog was like that - a golden retriever. If he saw water of any kind he was in it. Problem was if we were out and had to take him home in the car. A pond sometimes made him stinky.

Oh, yeah, he got frequent baths because of that! Pond water does make them stinky!

We've had black labs since we've been married. There's never been a puddle they haven't gone through.

Our neighborhood pool has a ""doggie swim"" after the last people swim. The next day is the pool maintenance and big cleaning when it's shut down for the season.

The dogs get an hour and it's a blast !
