I don't know anything about brands but just found out that iFlame (not a gas fireplace brand) works with lots of gas log brands to let you use Google or Alexa to...

Features:

Thermostat control

Thermostatic control is just the beginning. You can check outdoor temp, turn on installed features of your fireplace and more.

Phone icon

Our cloud-based app lets you use a smartphone or tablet to control your fireplace instead of the old-fashioned and often misplaced remote.

flame icon

Optional wifi Hub allows iFlame to operate your fireplace with voice commands through popular smart speakers.

So I can turn it on by voice like I do so many other things in the house.

Here are the brands that work with iFlame.  Do you see your system?

@Carmie

We have smoke detectors thruout the house but we've never had a CO detector with a wood burning fireplace.  We WILL be adding these when we convert to propane.

I don't know how much it costs here.  Most things aren't as costly down here than they are up north (if that's where you are).

I want to thank you so very much for all the detailed information on vented vs ventless gas fireplaces.  BTW, we also have a heatpump for our cooling and heating needs.  We have since we built this home in 1981.  And by "we", I mean DH (mostly).  I was pregnant and relegated to a lawn chair (g)

I read your reply to DH and we also Googled the differences between the two types.  We are going to go with the ventless gas fireplace.  And it will have to be propane as we are in the country and there is no natural gas line out here.  We will have an expert crew doing the installation and make sure we have the necessary alarms.  I'm sure we'll get plenty of good advice as we shop around and hubby will talk to installers that work for high end builders.  We have a crackerjack plumper that thinks he's a Dr (by how much he charges)...plumbing is the one thing my husband hates more than anything.  He can do it (no codes out here) but he hates it.  He just installed a new bidet last weekend.  Words were said Smiley Surprised

Re: Propane Fire Places

[ Edited ]

@jlkz when we built our home, the plans called for a propane fireplace in the bedroom.  I agreed to one in the living room but not the bedroom.  I like it cool to sleep.

We have a wood stove in the family room.  I love that in our winters.  We have since installed a whole home generator so the need for the wood stove in a power outage is not as great.

I noticed @Kachina624 's comments about fireplaces that don't give heat.  Who knew?

@Lilysmom1.  I often think how great they'd be for people who live in Florida who want the ambience of a fire but not the heat.

Well long story short, no vented or ventless fireplace for us. Will stick with burning real wood.

After seeing vented fireplaces, my husband decided against the ventless. Then we discovered that you could not adjust the Heat on a vented fireplace. That was the deal breaker.  This fireplace was for ambience more than heat and he wanted me to be able to have a fire when he was gone 😪

I have to think something is wrong with the installation for you to have a propane smell and soot.

Back in the early to mid 90s, Rush Limbaugh had a 1/2 hour tv show.  He had a video fireplace in the background.  I found one and bought it.  It was a CD.  Like you, I now use YT Smiley Happy

I guess it's possible about the installation.  But I had a propane fire pit outside,  and I could still smell that distinctive odor every once in a while.  Maybe I have an overly sensitive nose!  We have a white mantle and surrounding frame up against the fireplace, so it was easier to see it looking dull.  Good luck with your new setup, hope you enjoy it!

If you have  VENTED GAS fire logs, are you able to adjust the flame?

We live in the country and there are no natural gas lines out here so we would have had to use propane.  Neither one of us liked the idea of not being able to adjust the flame.  I think it has something to do with using propane.  But it squashed his dream of a gas fireplace Smiley Sad  Mine too.  We plumbed it when we built it.  I won't be able to use the fireplace when he's gone.  I guess I can buy those boxes of "logs" that you can buy at WM.  Something like this.  OTOH, I'd probably be scared to have a fire if I lived here alone.
