Re: Pronunciation

[ Edited ]

I am in PA. For either I say E-ther. For envelope, I say EN velope. For Marquise. I say markee (I thought the S is silent). I could go on and on.

But what else I wanted to say is, how we speak generally depends where we are from.

I live in PA Dutch country. I say outten the lights. You probably say turn the lights out.

I used to also have a PA. Dutch accent on occasion that I would say House more like haus and now like nah. (and there are more) But I corrected those last pronunciations over the years. I think I originally said those words that way because my Mom and Nana (Moms step mom) used to talk PA Dutch around me when I was young. Then there's the other side of the family, my dads side. The Italian side. So I know some Italian too, but that's a whole 'nother story!

I am Canadian and we definately pronounce words differently and also have different expressions and names for things. We say toque for your knit cap.i call the car tab a decal while here it is a deecal. We pronounce it with a short e as there is no e on the end or double e in the spelling.

That simply is not true.  However, I have never quite seen "pronunciation" spelled like that.   😊

You like potato and I like potahto
You like tomato and I like tomahto
Potato, potahto, Tomato, tomahto.

LOL, are you new?    Telling people how to pronounce something is a very passionate topic.   I've seen these threads get closed.

Do you say P-CANS or  P-KAHNS?  I am in the P-KAHN camp.

Do you say New-KLEE-er  OR  New-Q-ler   I say New-KLEE-er.  I can't even see how you get New-Q-ler out ot those letters but I've heard it said that way.
